Principal's Message
All of us at West Hollywood Elementary; students, teachers, support staff, parents and community members, are dedicated to educating the leaders of tomorrow. We are proud to uphold a rigorous and challenging learning environment rich in diversity, celebrated in achievement and filled with possibility; a setting where all of us learn and achieve great things. Six years ago our school faced the challenge of declining enrollment and stagnant academic growth and was in dire condition. Since then, we have become a school eagerly sought after by neighborhood families and community members due to our continued academic gains and wealth of enrichment opportunities. Key in this burgeoning enrollment is our current year API growth of 66 points, carrying our school to an all time API high of 800, the highest point gain in all of District 4 of the Los Angeles Unified School District. We attribute this long-range growth to elevated academic and social expectations combined with dedicated and engaged participants, be they our students, teachers, classified staff, certificated personnel or community members, all working together to strengthen our instruction, maintain our momentum and solidify our purpose. Further, it is our belief that working together in the spirit of distributed leadership, our school-community team has achieved our current academic standing through practices deeply imbedded with social and emotional enrichment combined with a sustained and rigorous implementation of curriculum closely tied to state standards and tailored to meet each child’s individual need. Purposeful and thematically connected professional development is paramount to our success. Designed and delivered by members of the teaching and administrative staff, district specialists and outside agencies, our professional development provides our staff with unique opportunities such as summer conferences in Differentiated Instruction strategies, collegial best practice sharing and supportive district presentations geared toward our current academic needs and focused on improving our instructional practice. Through these experiences and an ever deepening understanding of the state frameworks and standards, we are providing each educator, paraprofessional, support provider and parent, outstanding tools to improve instruction and build collegial strengths throughout our school. As a result, all of us are now experiencing the great joy of seeing our students achieve high level academic achievement. Committed and dedicated, our staff and community have come from a site lacking enticements to a school welcoming, wholeheartedly, all those who expect great things.
