Mr. Joe VandenBussche – Resource Teacher
-
Joe VandenBussche has been teaching Special Education at West Hollywood
Elementary for the past nine years. He has credentials in both Special
Education and General Education. In 2002, Joe went through the process of
becoming a National Board Certified Teacher. He works with new teachers in
the school, offering support through collaboration meetings and mentoring.
Joe is also on Mayor Villaragosa’s Council of Education Advisors. What Joe
loves most about West Hollywood Elementary School is the inclusive culture
that has been formed – A place where all students can come to school and
learn in a safe environment.
Mrs. Sheila McNally - Literacy Coach

My name is Sheila McNally. I am the new Literacy
Coach here at West Hollywood Elementary after teaching all grades and
multiple years for LAUSD. I earned a Bachelor's Degree at USC for
Education and English, completed the Reading Specialist Program and studied
Speech Education for Mild/Moderate Disabilities at CSUN.
Mr. Michael Martin - Math Coach
- Hello. My name is Michael Martin and I am the math coach at West
Hollywood Elementary School. I received my teaching credential through Cal
State Los Angeles, and have work in the U.S. and Japan both as a teacher and
developer of educational materials. I love finding ways to excite and
motivate students to explore math concepts and to sharpen their problem
solving skills.
Ms. Deborah Berry-Craig – Kindergarten

My name is Deborah Barry-Craig. I have been teaching at West Hollywood
Elementary school for 24 years. I currently teach Kindergarten and I love
it! All new Kindergarteners need to enter this grade knowing their alphabet
and numbers up to 10. Here are some of the things incoming Kindergarteners
should expect to learn by the end of the year: they will learn their numbers
to 30, 25 sight-words, and all of their letters and sounds. They will also
be able to write at least two complete sentences using phonetic spelling.

Miss. Dana Velasquez - 1st Grade

Hello. My name is Dana Velasquez and I teach 1st
grade at West Hollywood Elementary. I earned my teaching credential
from Cal State, LA. Working at West Hollywood is wonderful, we are a
community of learners in which we all strive to have a positive learning
environment to educate all children. I have had the great pleasure of
teaching 3rd grade and now 1st.
Mr. Michael Isreal - 1st Grade

My name is Michael Israel. This is my 4th year teaching first grade at
West Hollywood Elementary. I graduated from Edinboro University of
Pennsylvania with a Bachelor's degree in history and am currently attending
Loyola Marymount University, pursuing a Reading Specialist credential and
master's degree in Child Literacy. Prior to teaching, I coached high school
cross-country and track & field. I enjoy reading, playing tennis, and
music.
Mrs. Evette Yancey – 2nd Grade

I have been at W.H. since September 1982. I’ve taught grades K-4, but
have spent most of my time with the 1st and 2nd grades. I am married with
one daughter who is sixteen years old. I also have a pet cat, Phoebe, who is
six. I just completed requirements for a Master’s Degree in Elementary
Education, with an emphasis on reading and literacy. I have always wanted to
teach, ever since I was a little girl. Teaching is a passion of mine. I love
to “see” my children learn.
Miss. Juliet Melzer – 2nd Grade

Hello, my name is Juliet Melzer and I teach 2nd grade. This is my
2nd
year at West Hollywood Elementary and I have been welcomed with open arms! I
moved last year from Baltimore, Maryland, where I majored in Elementary
Education at Towson University. My love for teaching and Los Angeles brought
me to West Hollywood Elementary. It has been a pleasure working with the
faculty and staff here and I look for the years to come.
Miss. Allison Camell – 3rd Grade

My name is Allison Camell. I teach 3rd grade at West Hollywood
Elementary School. I enjoy working at West Hollywood because the students
and staff are a wonderful group of people who represent many diverse
experiences and backgrounds from which we can all benefit and learn. Before
moving to Los Angeles, I taught 3rd and 4th grade in Bakersfield, California
where I was born and raised. I attended California State University,
Bakersfield where I received my Bachelors and Teaching Credential.
Miss. Hernandez - 3rd Grade

Hello. My name is Wendy Hernandez, and I currently
teach 3rd Grade. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a
minor in Education from UCLA. I have been teaching for nine years, two
of which have been here at West Hollywood. I enjoy teaching very much,
as well as dancing Salsa, entertaining, painting and spoiling my dog, Kirby.
Mr. Acosta - 4th Grade

Hello. My name is Marvin Acosta, and I teach 4th
grade. I have been teaching at West Hollywood Elementary for the past
6 years. I earned my teaching Credentials from Long Beach State
University. I love teaching because I get to empower children and
learning opens up new worlds. I try to help my students obtain
unlimited success and mastery of concepts and knowledge.
Mrs. Skinner - 4th Grade

My name is Mrs. Skinner and I currently teach one of the
two 4th grade classes. I earned my Bachelor's Degree as well as my
General Elementary Credential from Cal State, Northridge. Throughout
the years, I have strived to teach my student to become life long learners
using strategies and skills following the California State Standards.
Mrs. Allison Aliaga - 5th Grade

Hello. My name is Allison Aliaga and I teach first grade at West
Hollywood Elementary School. I hold a bachelor's degree in Spanish from the
University of California, Santa Barbara and a master's degree in education
from the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to my service at West
Hollywood I have taught first and second grade in Lennox, CA and was a
literacy coach in Chicago, IL. I enjoy teaching, running, traveling, reading
and embarking on new adventures.
Ms. Patti Russo - 6th Grade

I’ve been teaching here at West Hollywood Elementary
since March, 1986 when I took over a 6th grade class. I have a
M.A. in Elementary Education and a Supplementary Authorization in
Mathematics. During the summer, for twelve to fourteen years, I helped
facilitate the California Math Project at CSU-DH. Teaching is my passion
because I love kids and learning.
Mr. Miguel Navarro – 6th Grade

Hello, my name is Miguel Navarro, and I am one of the
sixth grade
teachers here at West Hollywood Elementary. I grew up in Calexico
California, a border town to Mexicalli, Baja California Mexico with no
brothers or sisters, but over 15 cousins. I am married and have a 4-year-old
son. After graduating from High School in
1986, I moved to Northridge, CA. and attended Cal State, Northridge. I received
my degree in Deaf Studies with a focus on Education. I am fluent in English,
Spanish, and American Sign Language and had the opportunity to work in the
Deaf and Disabled community for 10 years after which I moved into teaching
in the public schools. I have been at West Hollywood Elementary for 10 years and
love every moment!
